EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Emotional health is an important part of overall health. Au pairs who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They’re able to cope with life’s ups and downs of being away from home.

Being emotionally healthy doesn’t mean you’re always happy. It means you’re aware of your emotions. You can deal with both positive or negative feelings. Emotionally healthy people still feel stress, anger, and sadness; knowing how to manage each feeling. Along with reaching out for support when a problem is more than they can handle on their own.

We are currently living through difficult times.  The pandemic of 2020 is unprecedented.  We find ourselves having a normal reaction to an abnormal event.  Many of us are far from home and full of worry and anxiety about our loved ones.  That said, it is normal to feel isolated, alone, scared, angry, frustrated, and overwhelmed.  Many of our usual coping strategies are quite limited due to quarantine and  social distancing.  We will get through this and there are ways to reach out for support. Taking care of our emotional and physical well being is vital to our ability to move forward in a healthy manner.   It may take a little creativity, but we must try.  This column is to help us cope with the stressors in our current situations.  No question is too small, too silly, or too unusual to ask.  What you may be struggling with is most likely what someone else is concerned with too.  We can persevere through anything in life if we know we are not alone.  Let’s help ourselves and by doing so we can be a life raft for others as well.
